What Drop Shipping is and How It Works

Drop shipping is one of the most vaunted ways to make money online; it gives you the ability to be a merchant selling whatever you like without having to worry about inventory.  Drop shipping works like the old door to door salesman did; you are selling products on behalf of companies, but you get to get to keep most of the profits instead of just getting a sliver.  Plus, unlike those door-to-door salespeople, your ‘territory’ is the whole world!  Drop shipping has become increasingly more popular as the internet gets easier to manage and the trick has become not one of starting one, but rather becoming successful money makers online.

If you want to start a drop shipping company on the internet, you have your work cut out from you right from the beginning; drop shipping companies are full of scammy practices, deceiving people into giving up their time and money for next to nothing in return.  The first thing you have to do is choose wholesale distributors that are legitimate and have a good reputation.  You may also want to invest a bit of money in a good program to teach you step by step how to do everything so you get it correct right from the start.  Alongside your research legwork, you also need to figure out what to sell.  Books, electronics, and clothing are all popular, as are herbal medicines and movies.  Once you’ve figured out WHAT to sell and WHO to sell with, you next set up your website (this can be done with simple programs such as Microsoft FrontPage or you can hire someone to do it), get it hosted with a registered domain name, and then start marketing yourself!  Much of the selling process and paying back the wholesaler is automated, leaving you to simply update daily what was sold, to whom, and for how much so that the wholesaler can handle the shipping details.  You then get paid the amount of money owed to you after the initial price of the product (so for example, a computer program sold to you for $500.00 which you turn around and resell for $700.00 would net you a $200.00 paycheck).

Obviously, this sounds easier than it is.  Much of the legwork is done in the initial planning stages and then in marketing.  There are a lot of options for marketing out there and taking advantage of as many of them as possible will be the key to your success.  However, after a couple months of hard work, you may find that much of your profits becomes automated; people are coming to your shop to buy things and all you have to do is maintain your website and a presence online.  In fact, the idea behind most drop shippers is that over time, you can quit your normal job and move solely online.

It takes work, but drop shipping to make money online is a good way to go about it, especially if you enjoy selling a certain kind of product and want to share your passion to the world.  There are plenty of comfortable well off merchants using this system to show that it works and a few extremely wealthy ones; for example, Amazon, Best Buy and other mega-online stores started out doing just this and still use this model.  However, like any successful online business deal, you have to have a good plan, do your research and then market it.  When you do that, you’ll find that you can make great money online and work from home selling and talking about things you enjoy.
